Capital Group’s $6B Bitcoin Play

U.S. investment giant Capital Group has grown its Bitcoin-linked stock portfolio to more than $6 billion, transforming its initial sub-$1 billion bet into a multibillion-dollar win.

Portfolio manager Mark Casey revealed to The Wall Street Journal that the firm treats Bitcoin as a commodity, much like gold or oil, and continues to allocate capital into Bitcoin-related equities.

From MicroStrategy to a $6B Portfolio

Capital Group’s crypto journey began in 2021 when it purchased a $500 million stake in Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), the largest corporate Bitcoin holder. Over time, the firm diversified its exposure, acquiring stakes in Japan’s Metaplanet and shares of mining company MARA Holdings.

Today, despite slight dilution, Capital Group’s stake in Strategy is valued at roughly $6.2 billion — a result of the stock’s 2,200% rally over the past five years.

Bitcoin as the “Next Gold”

Casey believes Bitcoin may eventually rival or surpass gold’s market capitalization. However, he remains skeptical of other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, doubting their ability to hold long-term value.

“We view bitcoin as a commodity,” Casey said, adding that his team uses the same analysis methods as they would for gold or oil firms.

Corporate Bitcoin Treasuries Expand

Bitcoin’s adoption as a treasury asset is accelerating, with over 190 public companies now collectively holding more than 1 million BTC.

Strategy leads the pack with 638,460 BTC, while new entrants like KindlyMD recently purchased 5,743.91 BTC following a merger with Nakamoto Holdings. Trump Media & Technology Group, Rumble, and HK Asia Holdings have also announced Bitcoin treasury plans.

With BTC trading near its $120,000 all-time high, corporate interest continues to surge, suggesting Bitcoin’s role as a strategic reserve asset is far from over.
