Meta reportedly plans to launch artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots with different personalities to engage its users. However, questions arise over its impact on users’ privacy.
AI companies are racing to launch their chatbots. And now, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta wants to compete with the AI flag-bearers Google and OpenAI.
Insider sources from Meta told the Financial Times that the company plans to launch AI chatbots for its four billion users by September. The Meta staff addresses the AI chatbots as “Personas” because they can talk like different personalities, or famous historical figures like Abraham Lincoln.
The sources said that the primary purpose of AI chatbots is to engage with users. However, they also mentioned that Personas could collect huge user data to serve targeted advertisements and recommendations.
Concerned with the data collection, AI ethics advisor Ravit Dotan said:
“Once users interact with a chatbot, it really exposes much more of their data to the company, so that the company can do anything they want with that data.”
There is no official confirmation about the development from Meta. However, in an earnings call, Zuckerberg said that the company would share its AI roadmap in September.

Meta is also planning an open-sourced commercial version of AI models aimed at overthrowing the duopoly of Google and OpenAI.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has already made his AI plans official with the announcement of xAI last month. Musk’s new Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) product aims to understand the reality and the true nature of the universe.
Along with the surge in competition, developments in AI are also increasing rapidly. Hence, there must be regulations in place for responsible AI development, maintaining safety and transparency standards
As a first step, the leaders from AI giants such as Google, OpenAI, Meta, Amazon, and others pledged to maintain responsible AI development at the White House.
