Social media juggernaut, Meta, is set to launch its decentralized Twitter alternative in late June, according to some reports. The app will be compatible with Mastodon.
Meta is making progress with its decentralized Twitter alternative, with the launch of the product slated for late June. The new Instagram text-based app, which as of yet has no official name, will be compatible with the well-known decentralized platform Mastodon.
Could Meta’s Decentralized Microblogging Platform Take Off?
Details of the microblogging platform were posted on Twitter, with the app “built on the back of Instagram but will be compatible with some other apps like Mastodon.” This allows users on apps like Mastodon to search for profiles and content on the new Meta platform.
Like Twitter, the app will have a character limit for every post, up to 500 characters. The reports are that the app looks a lot like Twitter when it comes to the actual interface.
The app offers such quality-of-life features as being able to “tune out the noise” while also being able to offer expected uses such as talking directly with your audience. The app is being operated under the codename P92 or Barcelona.
Meta explained in a statement offered to MoneyControl,
“We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.”
Twitter Killers Rise in Number
The number of Twitter alternatives has been increasing over the past year, with Mastodon, Bluesky, and Nostr Damus all offering such services. Decentralized in nature, they have caught the attention of the wider public following the many incidents at Twitter since Elon Musk took over.
Bluesky’s CEO Jay Graber has said that the idea is to build a platform where a centralized figure cannot censor. The Bluesky app has already gone live on the Apple App Store. Mastodon, meanwhile, continues to be the most popular choice for a decentralized Twitter alternative. Damus is a more recent arrival, built on top of the Nostr protocol, and is working on growing its user base.
Meta has also been focusing on other technology in a bid to reinvent itself. AI and the metaverse are the biggest of these developments. The company recently introduced generative AI for advertisers and content creators, offering tools that improve customer engagement on social media.
To accompany these developments, Meta is also working on new hardware and infrastructure projects. That includes a new AI data center design and its own chip.
