A Community-Led Proposal
Namada, a layer-1 blockchain and shielded asset hub, is introducing an innovative governance proposal from its community member, Ether Gavin. The proposed idea provides for the airdrop of the NAM token to Coin Center donors-the leading crypto advocacy group-in a novel approach to ensure alignment with Namada’s priorities on the funding of public goods and furthering the crypto ecosystem at large.
The timing of the proposal, announced on December 17, falls in the holiday season, emphasizing the spirit of giving. If approved by the community, the initiative would grant 1 to 2 million NAM tokens to Coin Center. This accounts for roughly 2–4% of the annual budget of the Public Goods Fund (PGF), a substantial commitment to nurturing blockchain advocacy efforts.
Details of the Proposal
The proposed campaign is to run for three weeks, which is a good time for community engagement and participation. According to Ether Gavin, the initiative will have multiple purposes: to drive donations to Coin Center’s Ethereum address, broaden the distribution of NAM tokens, and showcase Namada’s commitment to funding impactful projects in the blockchain space.
Community Reactions
Community feedback has been overwhelmingly supportive, and Gavin said in the announcement, “Stakers, this is a signaling proposal to gauge your interest. So far, our community likes this idea.” This just goes to show how values of supporting innovation and advocacy are shared within the Namada community.
Why Coin Center Matters
Coin Center is a U.S.-based nonprofit focused on research and education on the regulatory and legal challenges of the cryptocurrency industry. Coin Center has been on the forefront, advocating for the fair treatment of blockchain technologies and decentralized protocols. A recent win in court from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals further strengthened Coin Center’s position: that decentralized protocols and immutable smart contracts are not property and cannot be sanctioned-a crucial precedent for the industry.
Coin Center’s 2024 Priorities
Looking ahead, Coin Center has outlined several key objectives for the coming year. These include protecting developers of non-custodial software from unjust prosecution, advocating for tax reforms that benefit crypto users, ensuring regulatory clarity around securities and commodities laws, and defending the rights of American crypto owners.
By supporting this airdrop initiative, Namada not only contributes to Coin Center’s mission but also strengthens the blockchain community’s collective voice in shaping the future of crypto.
