Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has raised an urgent alarm: the rapid advancement of quantum computing could break Ethereum’s existing cryptographic foundations as early as 2028. With billions of dollars secured on-chain, he argues that the network must shift its priorities to long-term security and predictability.

Buterin’s warning comes amid growing concern that elliptic curve cryptography, widely used in blockchain systems, could become vulnerable once quantum computers reach higher computational power.

Why Ethereum’s Base Layer Must Stabilize

According to Buterin, Ethereum’s Layer 1 should no longer be an experimental environment. Instead, it must become an almost unchanging settlement and security layer, ensuring that the core protocol remains dependable and free of unpredictable bugs.

He believes that innovation, iteration, and risk-taking should be delegated entirely to Layer 2 networks, which can evolve rapidly without compromising Ethereum’s fundamental stability.

The End of the Experimental Era

Buterin noted that the early Ethereum ethos—open experimentation and continuous protocol evolution—has faded. The ecosystem is now dominated by memecoins, copycat tokens, and fast-moving, speculative trends. As a result, the base layer must prioritize reliability over novelty.

This marks a cultural shift: Ethereum’s foundation will solidify, while creativity and technical expansion move to modular L2 environments.

Quantum Computers and the Collapse of Elliptic Curves

The most urgent point centers on quantum computing. Elliptic curve cryptography, which secures Ethereum accounts and signatures, could become obsolete. If quantum machines achieve sufficient scale, they could potentially break current keys, exposing all assets on-chain to theft.

Buterin estimates a four-year window before this risk becomes critical. That means Ethereum must transition to quantum-resistant cryptographic schemes before the 2028 US elections.

Four Years to Reinforce Ethereum

The timeline is tight. Upgrading the protocol, coordinating client teams, updating wallets, and executing a global migration to quantum-safe signatures is a massive undertaking.

However, Buterin believes it is achievable if the ecosystem focuses on what matters most: security, predictability, and long-term technological resilience.
