Co-Founder of Rooch Network, Targeted in Bangkok
Haichao Zhu, the co-founder of Rooch Network, had an almost terror situation in Bangkok, Thailand. He alleged to have been robbed, knifed, and attacked in the city that he had visited to attend Ethereum Devcon 2024. Publishing his ordeal on X, Zhu asked all the attendees that stayed in town to be cautious.
Details of the Attack
Zhu recalled, he was attacked on the first night he arrived in Bangkok, the attackers snatched his phone and gave him only a scratch. Zhu spent the night in a local police station though discontented, with a case that wasn’t even close to being solved. He added that even as Bangkok is a generally safe city for tourists, they have to be more cautious at night.
Response from Rooch Network and Evidence Searching
Jole Star, the second co-founder of Rooch Network, said there were plans to go through surveillance footage from local businesses around the incident. While he was optimistic, he said that identifying the assailants may be a difficult task. He also urged Devcon attendees not to go out alone at night and not use phones while walking as part of mitigating the risk.
Ethereum Devcon 2024: Key Gathering for Crypto Leaders
Organized annually by the Ethereum Foundation, this year’s Ethereum Devcon will start on November 12 in Bangkok, with noted personalities including Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin and former secretary of Portugal Bruno Macaes in attendance – proof of its importance for the decentralized technology community.
Crypto Community Grows Safety Concerns
What happened with Zhu also shares a resemblance with what has been happening to other famous figures in cryptocurrencies. This July, another crypto big shot had been the target of an attempted robbery during the Ethereum Community Conference in Brussels. This August, eleven Israeli tourists had been robbed of $700,000 in Bitcoin, while this June, a man was murdered after he had been forced to transfer almost 3 Bitcoins.
These incidents have underlined a disturbing trend that seemingly has targeted professionals in the cryptocurrency space, raising calls for increased awareness and security in the community.
