FSC Allows Access to offshore Crypto ETFs

The Financial Supervisory Commission of Taiwan has taken a step to allow professional investors access to offshore cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds through local brokers. Their motive for the decision was to increase investment diversity, while they also vowed to tighten scrutiny to protect investors from risks associated with virtual assets that are highly volatile.

Who Qualify as Professional Investors?

The FSC has allowed access to these foreign crypto ETFs only to professional investors. They are defined as institutional investors, high-net-worth entities, and individual investors who are classified as professionals. The decision is because the nature of cryptocurrencies is complicated and too volatile to allow small investors who do not have substantial experience in virtual assets.

Stringent Suitability Assessments

This means that securities firms brokering such investments are now required to conduct strict suitability checks on whether would-be investors possess sufficient knowledge and experience in matters involving crypto-related products. These shall be at board level and prior to clients making their first purchases.

Ongoing Monitoring for Investor Protection

The FSC promised to constantly keep an eye on these policies being put into practice. The commission was working on a balance to protect investors’ interests while ensuring local securities companies remained competitive. As Taiwan joins the list of markets opening up to crypto-linked products, regulatory caution becomes of essence.

Regulatory Caution Amidst Growing Fraud Concerns

Earlier this year, FSC Chairman Huang Tianzhu called for the adoption of severe measures against fraudulent crypto activities. Moreover, he added that cryptocurrencies are far from being directly related to the real economy and pointed to a rise in risks from unregulated overseas investments, which may signal further regulatory action.

Tokenmetrics

The regulatory framework of Taiwan, concerning crypto ETFs, is balanced between market demand and investor protection in the fast-evolving digital asset space.
