Tether to Launch Hashrate on OCEAN’s Bitcoin Mining Pool
Tether, the stablecoin issuer of USDT, announced on April 14 plans to launch Bitcoin mining hashrate on OCEAN, a decentralized mining pool built by Bitcoin Core developer Luke Dashjr.
The move is part of Tether’s continuous attempts to back Bitcoin’s infrastructure and decentralization drive, with CEO Paolo Ardoino noting alignment with the company’s mining investments.
Deploying hashrate to OCEAN also demonstrates our financial commitment to mining and our commitment in general to securing Bitcoin from centralizing influences,” Ardoino said.
Empowering a Decentralized Future of Bitcoin
OCEAN launched in late 2023 with the support of Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. The platform was designed to offer censorship-resistant mining solutions and published its decentralized mining template, DATUM, in September 2024.
OCEAN’s Chairman and CTO Luke Dashjr welcomed the partnership with Tether with the following comment:
“Tether’s involvement is a strong demonstration that decentralization remains a major focus for Bitcoin’s future.”
Global Expansion and Strategic Investments
Tether released a statement indicating that the rollout of software would be extended to its global activities, including subdeveloped regions such as Africa. The growth aligns into the company’s overall goals, including infrastructure, education, and artificial intelligence.
Early this year 2025, Tether will officially open its headquarters in El Salvador—a pro-Bitcoin country where OCEAN’s headquarters are already located since May 2024.
Tether’s Growing Influence
Tether’s USDT stablecoin has passed above $144 billion in circulation. In March, it reported more than 400 million users, 14% of which have grown in merely five months.
The firm also recently increased its stake in Latin America-headquartered Adecoagro to 70%, showing its broader investment objectives beyond stablecoins.
The OCEAN partnership is an expression of Tether’s long-term vision for decentralized finance and the strength of Bitcoin.
