Thailand will become a leading digital asset hub through the provision of a five-year tax holiday on capital gains from cryptocurrency transactions. The policy, which was released on June 17, will be in effect from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2029.

Tax Relief on Licensed Crypto Transactions

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat stated that the exception is for personal income tax of profit from sale of digital assets from transactions via institutions under the 2018 Royal Decree on Digital Asset Businesses — exchanges, brokers, and dealers.

The reform is supposed to be more transparent in trading and to boost local growth in digital finance businesses, and at least 1 billion baht in medium-term tax revenue is expected by the Ministry.

Transparent and Regulated Crypto Ecosystem

According to global norms, the trade has to be facilitated through platforms overseen by Thailand’s Anti-Money Laundering Office. Thailand will also implement the OECD’s automatic exchange of information system, which will further help enhance transaction transparency and global coordination.

This is all part of broader attempts to bring crypto activities under a safe, regulated environment supervised by the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Regulatory Actions and Market Response

Thailand had closed off access to a handful of unlicensed foreign exchanges, including Bybit, OKX, and CoinEx, as of June 28. KuCoin, however, received its SEC license and established a compliant local subsidiary, joining a group of nine fully licensed exchanges in the country.

Securing Thailand’s Crypto Future

Thailand’s digital currency market is one of Southeast Asia’s liveliest. The tax incentive — in conjunction with compliance and innovation like crypto-tourism payment — is a manifestation of a long-term strategy to attract investment, encourage financial innovation, and make Thailand a digital asset leader.
